The Island: Dhigurah

Dhigurah, meaning "Long Island" in Dhivehi, is truly a gem among the local islands in the Maldives, that lies 96km away from the Velana International Airport in the South Ari Atoll. Renowned for its stunning beaches, this island has earned its place among the world's best. Surrounded by the majestic presence of mantas and whale sharks, Dhigurah offers a year-round spectacle of marine wonders.

Dhigurah has 3 kilometers in length and a mere 250 meters at its widest point, this island is a cozy haven for 600 friendly local residents. The charming village nestles in the northern part of the island, leaving the south by nature and a stunning sandbank—a perfect haven for watching the mesmerizing sunset.

What sets this island apart is its enchanting natural palm tree forest and the exceptional diving spots right at its fingertips. Divers can explore 15 pinnacles nestled between Dhigurah and its neighboring island, with Luda Rah just 15 minutes away. For the adventurous, the Kudhima wreck, a 59m long cargo ship resting on a sandy bottom at around 30 meters depth, awaits exploration.

Covered in palm and artocarpus trees, Dhigurah is a picturesque haven surrounded by magnificent beaches and crystal-clear lagoons. White sandy beaches line the island's borders, while the lush interior is a tropical paradise, brimming with palm trees.

Dhigurah isn't just an island; it's a vibrant ecosystem. The clear lagoon surrounding it teems with diverse marine life, from colorful coral reefs and exotic fish to graceful turtles, manta rays, dolphins, and the majestic whale sharks. Dive in and witness the captivating underwater world.

And, of course, let's not forget the pièce de résistance—the breathtaking sunsets.

Can't wait for you to experience the magic of Dhigurah!

Watch the locals everyday life

Fishing is a key part of local island life on the Maldives, and many islanders rely on it for their livelihood. Fishing boats can be seen departing from the islands early in the morning, and the catch of the day is often sold at the local fish market. In addition to fishing, some locals also engage in tourism, agriculture, growing crops such as coconuts, bananas, and papayas. Learn how to weave a basket out of palm tree leaves or how to make your own coconut oil (seasonal).

Explore the Island´s beauty

In South Ari Atoll 400 lively whale sharks, predominantly playful juveniles have been spotted. Here on Dhigurah, the Maldivian Whale Shark Research Programme (M.W.S.R.P.) is alive with daily research, uncovering the secrets of these majestic creatures.

A highlight of Dhigurah? Swimming alongside these gentle giants during a 2-3 hour excursion, where 1-2 whale sharks often steal the show.

From January to May, you will be able to have a magical encounter with manta rays in their cleaning station.
